It's Friday the 13th and this day has a stigma of being "unlucky", but is it really? Is there really such a thing as "bad luck"? We are all creators of our own reality and life brings us more of what we focus on. So, knowing this, isn't it possible that those people who are focusing on superstitions like Friday the 13th being a day of "bad luck", are just bringing experiences into their lives that match their belief?
Personally, I've always thought of the number 13 as a lucky number. I'm not sure where amongst my life travels I picked up this belief but for as long as I can remember the number 13 has always been auspicious. So, while friends and coworkers often would be complaining of experiencing "bad luck" on this day (ie. getting a flat tire, missing their bus, or any event that could have happened to anyone on any day but because it was on the 13th, "the day" was blamed for their "misfortune"); I've always experienced the day as pleasant and often lucky (ie. winning $20 on a lottery ticket, getting a great deal on something I was shopping for, finding the perfect parking spot...again, these events could have happened on any other day but when they happen on the 13th, the "good luck" has been attributed to "the day"). As you can see, your experience of the day is directly proportional to what you believe and what you expect of "the day".
In countries like Canada and the U.S., many people who are superstitious have deemed Friday the 13th as a day of "bad luck" and they are actually fearful of this day, often grouping it in with other superstitious beliefs such as the fear of black cats and black crows. Being an animal lover, I have never understood the fear of black cats crossing your path. Why on earth would someone think this is "bad luck"? I would think that this is "good luck" actually, since chances are the black cat is trying to get your attention and since I view cats as loving, sentient beings; I think that is special. I'm not alone in thinking this. In Egyptian folklore, black cats were worshipped and it was believed that they brought good luck. In Welsh folklore, black cats were thought to bring good luck to a home and some even thought they could predict the weather. Even today, in Scotland, it is considered lucky for a strange black cat to arrive at your doorstep and in Japan, a black cat is thought to assist single women in finding suitors. Helping one find their true love sounds pretty "lucky" to me so it is interesting to see such a difference in the beliefs surrounding black cats across the various countries.
Black crows also have gotten a "bad rap" from those who are superstitious. These beautiful birds are often feared because of their black plumage, mysterious appearance, and scavenging habits which, to some, can evoke feelings of foreboding. Superstitious people fear the black crow symbolizes death or misfortune. However, like all prejudice, such beliefs stem from ignorance. If you ever have the chance to observe black crows, you will see they are quite clever and wise, with an innate ability to adapt to their surroundings. Native American myths and legends often extol the intelligence of the crow and they are depicted as symbols of good luck and wisdom. Japanese culture also recognizes the value of the crow and they believe the crow symbolizes gratitude, guidance, divineness, and good luck. In many Spiritual circles, the black crow represents transformation. Again, it all comes down to your belief system and your own thoughts which will, in turn, determine your experience with the black crow. This holds true for your experience with black cats, Friday the 13th, and any other superstition as well. If you believe it, you will experience it. So what beliefs are you ready to let go of?
